There is very little sense in discussing the issue now since no decisions would (note the use of the hypothetical, please) be made for at least five months, likely longer. As explained in Latitude, no decisions would be made until the remainder of our virtual airlines are added.

This is perhaps one of the more highly debated topics within the flightsim community. It's true....we (FS enthuasists) don't do any harm to the real world airlines. Nothing we do will harm their business....and nothing we do will really help their business.

The issue has more to do with brand recognition and trademark/copyright infrigment. Again....we're not harming their business...we're just playing a game. However, we're playing a game using their name, their trademark, their brand. In some cases, the lower end virtual airlines will even copy images and text word for word directly from their websites.

It's difficult for us to put ourselves in their shoes....especially when in most cases a virtual pilot will select a VA or an airline that they personally like in the real world. Think of it as purchasing a football jersey of your favorite player. It's all about fan loyalty. Of course the big difference here is these jersey's are officially licensed etc. (well in most cases)

Many VA's have been successful at reaching out to their real-world counterpart and seeking the various permissions to represent them within the virtual airline community. Some VA's have even been successful at receiving financial funding from their real-world airline counterpart.

There really isn't anything that VA Management can do when asked to cease-and-desist. They can appeal and see what happens...but in most cases the real world airline will win.

While I'm new to SimAirline.net, I'm not new to flight simulation or even virtual airlines. SimAirline.net is representing our real-world counterparts with the highest degree of professionalism possible. Kudos to the Management team for taking the high road.

To add on to it briefly, some virtual airlines are not accurate reflections of the airline in the real world. For instance, they may operate additional aircraft, routes, etc., or may simply use the same name and be a completely different operation. Concern over potential customer confusion and the costs of monitoring such content is part of what drives airlines to close their virtual counterparts.
