Which lights to use?

Post by maverick10 » 25 Aug 2009, 20:46

Hello all,

I'm confused. Sometimes when i'm spotting airplanes a couple of aircraft uses their strobe lights and beacon lights on a normal day.
So my question is: Which lights to use in day and which lights to use in the night?

Thanks in advance

The simple answer is you use the same lights during the day that you would use at night. During my training, we always used the position lights anytime the aircraft was in motion. We always used the landing lights below 10,000 feet when in the vicinity of an airport. We always turned the strobe lights on when entering the runway for takeoff and left them on until after clearing the runway after landing (the only exception to this rule was during heavy precipitation/solid clouds at night). The beacon light should be on any time an engine is operating on the aircraft.

The more visible your aircraft is the better, and even during the day the lights can help someone spot your aircraft that much faster.
