Hello all,

Why don't we upgrade Swissair to the newer Swiss?

Greetings,

Maverick10

Variety and options. Swissair was 50% larger than Swiss is today in terms of size, has more aircraft types, and many more destinations. In addition, the Swissair name is much more recognizable and has a higher reputation than Swiss. Based on all of these things, I would call changing to Swiss a downgrade, not an upgrade.

Also, in it's heyday, Swissair was The (with a capital T) airline to fly on. :)

You are missing the point. We are operating a classic airline as it was operated in the past. We also have several other airlines that are operated this way. Prime examples include: Varig (operated as if it were the early '90s) and Pan Am (operated as if it were the '60s).

Just because Swiss is a modern airline doesn't mean it's better than Swissair. It's like saying that a new sports uniform is automatically better because it's new, where it may be worse than the previous one.

By all means, fly as many Swiss flights as you want but you won't be able to file them here, at SimAirline.net.

The famous Swissair vs. Swiss International Air Lines debate.

Aaron pointed out two of the reasons to let Swissair as it is, but here's another:

No other Swissair VA whatsoever. We're the first (and so far only?) to have a VA based on what was once thought to be the most financially stable airline. So Stefan, the point you bring is not a valid one. So because Varig is newer we should switch operations to the new Varig. It's smaller, serves only domestic destinations in Brazil (and one or two international ones), but because it's modern we should make the switch.

The historic versions of these airlines are considered to be a tribute to those airlines. Like Fraser said, you can fly any airline you want. If you want SimAirline to credit flights, you must fly OUR flights.

Finally, Lufthansa does not allow VA under its name. Swiss is an independent subsidiary of Lufthansa, so if we try to open a Swiss, we may find ourselves closing it down for good.

I agree with you completely here but just wanted to point out that there is one VA based on the new Swiss and they got full permission from the real airline to use their names and logos. They also are so well connected with the real Swiss that they are able to get Pilot ID cards that gives you discounts at the Zurich airport stores. I know this because I fly with them.

No, but maybe since Varig is owned by Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, maybe we could include Gol's routes and aircraft. Maybe a codeshare type agreement. Im not real familiar with how codesharing works; but just an idea. Have the best of both worlds, a modern Brazilian flag carrier with a great legacy carrier of the past.

Well, If that is the case, then why don't we make an Air India Virtual instead of a Jet Airways virtual ?

Oh sure, and just ignore everything that Aaron has worked so hard for over the years. Yes, there are good reasons as to why we have the airlines we do and why airlines like GOL and Air India aren't included.

It wouldn't make sense to have old routes of Varig and have new ones being added. We're based on the late 1990s Varig, not the new one. All historic VAs will receive routes from that era, not newer ones.

And for the record, I said that with a little tone of sarcasm.

Let's calm down a little, everyone. I'm sure that every one of our members has preferences as to little changes that could be made here and there as far as what airlines are represented, and what era is represented. However, our future plans here at SimAirline are set, and the chances of anything being changed is extremely small. That doesn't mean change will never happen, but rather that it would involve a lot of thought and discussion on the part of management, and Aaron in particular.

Woah, this doesn't need to be so heated!! It's a legitimate question but I do think - like most people here - that it would be a downgrade. Swiss just isn't Swissair. Swissair was in icon, a shining beacon of excellence to the whole industry - Swiss is a great airline, of course. But it just isn't Swissair.
