A very bad day at Avsim and a bad day for us all.

Post by steve63 » 13 May 2009, 17:01

This is a bad day for us all.

Tom Allensworth, CEO and Publisher of AVSIM, today issued the following announcement; "We regret to inform the flight simulation community that on Tuesday, May 12, AVSIM was hacked and effectively destroyed. The method of the hack makes recovery difficult, if not impossible, to recover from. Both servers, that is the library / email and web site / forum servers were attacked. AVSIM is totally offline at this time and we expect to be so for some time to come. We are not able to predict when we will be back online, if we can come back at all. We will post more news as we are able to in the coming days and weeks. Update: A temporary forum has been set up to provide updates here.

What sucks even more is all my old stuff is now forever gone as I don't have 'em!

Lesson learned - NEVER trust just one source for storage (this also goes to Avsim as well, as the potential loss could've been avoided with off-site backup).

UPDATE: Hey, guess what I found! Guess I DID back up my old stuff! Although the newer-old stuff may be gone, but it's probably one or two files I no longer use anyway.

WOW...so would that explain why the library was having some issues?

Probably not, as the issues were due to new server and such. This just happened out of nowhere.

This makes things hard for Aaron and the higherups here. If I recall, weren't most of the downloads we use linked to that site? Worse comes to worse, we can turn to one of the many other large download sites that are in existence...

I sent my paints to Aaron-n-Friends so they can upload it here. FlightSim now has the capability to link to files supposedly, so there's hope.

Yesterday, I've posted on my blog about these darn hackers and virus-makers. I myself got two viruses hidden on my father's PC, and just have discovered them yesterday night. I lost many photos and videos from my latest "road-trips"...
I knew some hours ago about AVSIM, and I've got really upset. It really sucks, but I really hope the community shall rise again...

p.s. - if anyone wants to link to my blog (in portuguese, although), it's on http://aultimasala.blogspot.com.

This is indeed a very dark day in FS history, whoever pulled this kind of stunt needs to understand just what kind of damage they've done, this is a horrific thing to do.

However having said that, I am not too worried about it, data recovery is pretty easy these days, I've done it myself with some pretty nasty situations and it worked out just fine. Unless the hard drives were zeroed out which takes hours if not days and someone would've noticed and done something, the data should be recoverable given time.

Until then I'm not sure what we're going to do.

Nick, I don't understand about servers and data storing (I've lost many photos and videos of my old PC because of a virus, indeed), but Tom from Avsim said both of their servers "zeroed in"... is it possible to recover data even in these situations?
If not... we're in deep mud!
Cheers!

I read all of Tom's posts and never saw anything about being zeroed, the partitions were deleted (data list) but the data is still there, it's just not visible. Like someone being on stage but the lights off.

Hmm... so it COULD be restored!! :o That's great news, indeed!
Despite it shall take tons of time (4 TBs?), but that's great!

The sad part is that I used AVSIM almost exclusively as my source for aircraft. I never did like FlightSim's setup. Guess I'll have to get used to using them, now.

Tim, you got the point - instead of using other ways to download stuf for my PC, I'd rather use their servers, which I consider more complete and user-friendly!

Think I've just got the perfect song for this situation on my iPod right now... (Judas Priest - "Screamin' for Vengeance"). Oh, how I'd like to say some bad, bad stuff for these kind of low people! As like we say here in São Paulo, "dizer poucas e boas" ("say short but hard words")!!

I think maybe I'll start using my external hard drive to back up all my downloaded a/c. Thus far, I've only used it for schoolwork, and I feel it was a very worthwhile investment.

I'm gonna purchase a new computer these days, and I'll most likely be buying an external hard drive (maybe 500GBs if not higher). I think I'll download EVERY single aircraft from SimAirline.net, panels and sounds, and use that hard drive as a backup for all of these. Hopefully, if another attack does come, we can find a hosting source for them (and if that's not possible, then I can be glad knowing I can continue SimAirline.net flights).
