Thoughts so Far?

Post by Aaron Robinson » 09 Nov 2008, 20:19

I've heard remarkably little feedback to date for such an important and large change to SimAirline.net. How is the new timetable going so far? For those using the XLS, have you learned about the usefulness that the filters and sorting provide?

The new way is probably easier to update, but personally, I like the old way better. It's easier to read, for my older eyes, and what I need is on each VA's page - much easier on the pilot......in my opinion!

Rick, you can always zoom in if the text is too small.

Yes, I know I can zoom. But you were asking for opinions about this. Mine just happens to be I liked the way it was, with everything about a certain VA on that VA's page(s). The only change I would have liked, was to have the airports listed both ways ( 3 letter code, and 4 letter code ).

Rick: you know you can switch between the codes, right? It's set to only list one at a time because our recent poll showed that most pilots are more familiar with one system than the other, and to conserve valuable width so we wouldn't have to reduce the visual font size even further.

Aaron, I think he was saying that the only problem with the old version was it wasn't listed both ways.

To see the timetables for the airlines I use, I have to use One World, Star Alliance, Sky Team, and the SimAirline home page. Finding what routes I can fly with a certain aircraft is often like playing twenty questions. With the new timetable at SimAirline, it is much easier to see what route I can choose from (e.g. Alitalia with an MD-82, BA with an A-320 etc.), and from this point of view, I think it is a piece of brilliance.

Whilst I am not that proficient in Excel, I will certainly make sure I am soon in order to use the various filters for maximum convenience.

Thank you very much for all the hard work. It is much appreciated.

I find it much easier to acess by just clicking on the desk top icon but
because the flights are aranged by flight numbers it is far more time consuming to find the flight you want.
Case in point: It took me 10 minutes to find BA's flight from Tashkent to Yerevan because I did not
know the flight #. With the old Timetables everything was alphabetical and much easier to find. It would have
taken me about 30 seconds the old way.

Steve,

Two things you can do.
1) Search for the flight (ctrl+F, like in all programs).
2) Use the filters/sorting capability (see the arrows for each column?).

No worries. Based on your and other feedback, I've added an 'Excel Tips' section to the Legend of the latest version. If you have additional tips you think are worth including, please let me know so we can share them with everyone.

Okay I don't know if I am just being dumb or what but I can't figure this out. How do I use the filtering/sorting thing. I really want to be able to see the flights by departure airport rather then flight number but I can't figure it out for the life of me haha :|

Has the filtering got any Openoffice support? I don't use MS Excel as... well i'm tight. It doesn't seem to fit with Simairline.net's corporate image to offer support to payware, when a freeware alternative is available.

I think that the new timetable system is fantastic, having a more centralized database is much more accessible and easy to use. Also the ability to filter the timetable is great becuase one can find a flight based on what aircraft the route was flown with (which I often do). Good Job :)

Okay, are you using the Microsoft Excel version or the Adobe Acrobat version?

That's a good way to look at it.

Quite frankly, I preferred the old webpage way. I don't like the inconvenience of having to download the schedule every week; when I wanna look a flight up, I want it now-not in a few minutes.

I'm half and half on that. It would be really easy and cool if we had the excel document embedded on the flights page.
