Destination of the Week - Guayaquil, Ecuador

Post by Dennis » 24 Aug 2009, 01:37

The City of Guayaquil
Officially named Santiago de Guayaquil, the city is Ecuador’s largest and most populous city as well as capital of the Guayas province. It was founded by the Spanish in 1538, though by this time a native village was already there. During the 17th and 18th century, the city had been looted and attacked by British and French pirates; however, their attempts at destroying the city never came to fruition.

It was in 1822 that José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar met and discussed plans for Ecuador’s independence. However, in 1820 Guayaquil had already declared independence from Spain as a free province, upon which José Joaquín de Olmedo was declared Civil Chief of the city and would later be key to Ecuador’s independence.

Guayaquil today remains Ecuador’s most important economic center so it’s no wonder that the city is also the country’s largest port. Despite its trade importance, the city is also actively trying to attract tourism and has become host of several fairs and international events, as well as a national and international destination. Urban regeneration has become a focus for the city, with previous administrations succeeding in attracting funds to turn Guayaquil into a place for first-class international tourism and business multinationals.

José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE/SEGU)
Formerly named after Simón Bolivar, Guayaquil’s airport was renamed after a famous Ecuadorean poet and the city’s first mayor in 2006. It is located about 5 km north of the city center and has a runway large enough to accommodate large airliners.

In 2003-2004 it was decided to expand the airport with a new international terminal rather than opening a new airport. It was due to the new terminal that the airport changed its name. This new terminal, with over 50,000 square meters, handles both domestic and international flights and led to to the closing of the older terminal. The airport is expected to remain operational for 10-15 more years, by which time it is expected to reach capacity and for another airport to be built.

While Guayaquil is near sea level, the other main airport in Ecuador, Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport, is over 9,000 ft. in elevation, despite being less than 200 miles away. For this reason, many airlines traditionally serve Ecuador by arriving in Quito, departing for a short hop to Guayaquil, then returning home from there (KLM is a notable exception).

Location: 02 ° 09' 27 " S 79 ° 53' 01" W
Elevation: 19 ft.

Flown a few flights to Ecuador (though I have never logged them). My girlfriend is from there so I've taken a keen interest in the country. Very beautiful.

Curiously enough, I have a classmate from Guayaquil, so I thought about him and decided to write about his hometown.
