I was programming the MCDU for MX375 Mexico City-Caracas onboard the A320 a few minutes ago and noticed that after departure, the flight plan has me joining airway UA552 which runs along the Gulf of Mexico all the way down to Caracas (may go further, I don't know) putting me just a few miles off the final approach fix.

I have never (in 1,400 flights) ever had a flight plan that was so simple, and yet so long. This single airway will be taking me 2,200 miles weaving through multiple different countries and putting me almost exactly on my approach fix. WOW!

Anybody else know of crazy long airways / routings like this?

Most of El Al's flights into Tel Aviv set you up for the transition into RWY 12, which is always convenient. That being said, most of El Al's long hauls in general have strange routes due to the restrictions over El Al flights in Arabian airspace (and other countries like Somalia, Lebanon, etc.). Ory made this clear when he was around, but this topic over at the IVAO forums really puts it in perspective: http://forum.ivao.aero/index.php?topic=119487.0;all

I have been trying to fly back to Singapore from Sydney for the past few days, but computer problems and scheduling issues have prevented me from doing so. However, when I do get the flight completed, the routing will be: YSSY KAT A576 TI WSSS

That's 3,407nm on a single airway. :D

It's one of those flights where the captain volunteers to plug the flight plan into the FMS so the FO doesn't have to struggle with the damn thing, and the FO does the walk around only to find the captain snoozing in the cockpit when he returns. :P

Nope, made that up on my own. Sounds like something Les Abend would say, though. lol

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I saw David's posts on the El-Al routes (well, I have seen it dozens of times but the question came today). I think it is possible to load them to FS, right? And if so, how will I fly them? (GPS, VOR, etc.)

I'm not sure about loading them as a default plan. You probably need to find a site on the internet to do that for you. I just put it into a payware flight build utility called FSBuild and I can use it as a company route on all of my aircraft.

You can export a route from SimRoutes to put into FS9 or FSX, though with FSX you can put any waypoint you want into a route using the default flight planner if you know the coordinates for the waypoint.

Sorry to bring this post back up, but I just beat my previous record for following a single airway for the longest distance. I flew AFR279 from Narita to De Gaulle, and when I entered Russian airspace at IGROD, I started following airway A333 (and did the whole conversion to metric cruise altitudes, blech  ), and stayed on that airway the entire way through Russian airspace until I popped out into Finnish airspace at AGAMO. I'm not sure of the exact distance flown, but that is approximately 3,600 nm on a single airway.
