Following the link which takes you to the Project AI respective download page (in this case for Continental), after pressing the download button I was informed that I was not authorised to download. Do you have to be registered first. Anybody have any experience of downloading from this site.

Yes, you DO have to register before you can download from PAI

Also make sure that you have the installer which is available via a link at the top of the AI Traffic page.
