The brand new Boeing 747-800 (-8i & -8f) is currently in production. Boeing has just made a made a major milestone with the newest GEnx engine hang.

I'm relatively surprised yet happy that the 747-8 has a cockpit that looks relatively like the -400's. And I'm even happier that the cockpit is that shade of brown, and not the dull gray of the 787.

And Bryan, this isn't the 747-8i, only the freighter version.

It is widely known that Boeing will launch the 747-8F before the 747-8I, and that the first -8I to roll off production lines will go to Lufthansa.

Such a shame that neither FedEx nor UPS have ordered it. It would help both carriers retire some older planes (not that I'm against 3-holers

). It is also a shame that only Lufthansa has ordered the aircraft. Maybe different variants like a 747-8SP...?

At the moment, the only airline getting 747-8is is Lufthansa. So not only do they get the first but alllllllll of them. (For now, excluding the VIP orders)

It's being looked at but I for one would be outraged to see them spend money on something like this right now, the VC-25s are FINE.

The last I heard the US hadn't really made up its mind what it was to do, apart from the fact that it wasn't to be an Airbus aircraft.

Was looking it up on my Blackberry on my way home bout 3-5 months ago. They had not made up their minds on it, but was looking at it and talking bout replacing the 2 VC-25's

Right, the two VC-25s are to be replace sometime. And just because they are looking at purchasing the 747-8, doesn't mean they will.

Anyway, I'm sure there are other topics in which we could discuss the VC-25's replacement. Back on topic.

There is something called window shopping, which is what the Air Force is doing. They're studying whether the 747-8 is a suitable replacement for VC-25.

Now that we've made ourselves clear, perhaps we can continue discussing Boeing's work with the 747-8?

Besides LH, if some other airline is interested in the aircraft, which airline would it be? UA would benefit from some, unless they go for 777-300ERs or 77Ls. Japanese airlines could also want some configured for domestic capacity.

It's quite all right. It's normal for a thread to stray a little from its intended topic. He didn't mean that YOU should get back on topic, but more as a reminder to not talk about VC-25. Isn't the 747-8i planned for 2012?

It's a shame that NZ won't go for it.
They're getting 77W's instead. But that's a smart move, because they currently have 772's, so it would bring in some standardisation of fleet. Besides, nothing beats an extra-long stretched wide-body twin.

The-8I is planned for 2011. The -8F is planned for 2010.

On the Boeing plant tour, I saw the -800F being built for Caroglux. Looks like a nice plane.
