"Operated By" Callsigns

Post by Mr. Boeing »

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this thread but I figured AI Traffic section since it relates to my AI Traffic.

Here is my question: When an aircraft is painted in full colors of one airline, yet is still "operated by" another airline, which airline's callsign does the aircraft use? I figured because it is operated by the one airline then it should have that airline's callsign but I'm still not sure because the flight is for the other airline.

My situation is Afriqiyah Airways. The aircraft operated by Adria Airways for example. Would it use the Afriqiyah callsign, or the Adria callsign?

It depends on the situation. If it is a flight for an airline flown by another airline's aircraft, then the airline that the flight is operating for is the callsign. Here are some examples:

World Airways MD-11, MyTravel flight 361: Callsign: Kestrel 361 (mytravel's callsign)

Cathay Pacific Airways A330, Dragonair flight 789: Callsign: Dragonair 789

EuroAtlantic L1011, Air Greenland flight 7: Callsign: Greenland 7

In your situation:

Adria Airways Aircraft, Afriqiyah flight 765: Callsign Afriqiyah 765.

It may include a remark regarding the plane being in a different livery than the operator. Take NW's DL-painted planes, for instance. If ATC tells Captain Hotshot traffic is a Northwest DC-9, Captain Hotshot's gonna look for a well-dressed DC-9  However what if this DC-9 was in the DL livery? Captain Hotshot's gonna be boggled out of his tiny little mind! So ATC would specify that it's painted in DL colors.

Yes but he meant callsigns as if an aircraft was leased or borrowed from another airline.

Uh yea, but he's adding on to what you've said to give the "questionier" more information. I see no problem with that...
