Air Canada First to Cancel Mexico Flights
The World Health Organization has recently raised its pandemic alert level to 5 due to the ongoing spread of the strain H1N1 swine influenza virus. So far, many preventative actions are being taken around the world in the airline industry. For example, Thai Airways International reported that they disinfect every space on their jets to "potentially contaminated and high risk countries," which of course causes delays due to longer turns.
So far, only Air Canada of our airlines has suspended services to Mexico, the origin of the virus. All flights to/from Cancun, Cozumel, and Puerto Vallarta will be canceled until 1 June. Our other airlines at this point are operating normally, with the exception of fleet substitutions due to lighter passenger loads. This topic is currently being discussed on the Message Boards. More information on the swine flu pandemic can be found at the World Health Organization's website.

Air Canada Virtual Adds Northern Routes, Retired Aircraft
Air Canada Virtual has added several new routes to its route network, as well as some additional aircraft types operated by former regional partners.
First, Air Canada Jazz's BAe 146-200 is now available, with service between Montreal and Wabush. Air Canada Virtual now also includes the operations of NWT Air, which flew a 737-200 in partial Air Canada livery to destinations in the Northern Territory and Nunavut. It has since been acquired by First Air, which is an airline fully owned by the Inuit people of Canada. Finally, we've added the operations of Calm Air, which flew HS 748s (the first service of this type at SimAirline.net) in Manitoba and Nunavut. Until now, we've just had one destination (Winnipeg) in Manitoba, so this is a great addition to our central Canadian network. Calm Air was associated with Air Canada following the acquisition of Canadian Airlines, and has since gone its own way.
All of these new discontinued Air Canada flights are available in the SimAirline.net Timetable.

Montie Brewer Departs Air Canada
Air Canada President and CEO Montie Brewer abruptly announced his resignation yesterday and will be succeeded by Calin Rovinescu, a former executive at the airline. Brewer joined Air Canada since 2002, and took his current roles in December 2004. Under his leadership, Air Canada transformed its fare structure to the a la carte style that is being emulated worldwide.
Rovinescu was part of Air Canada from 2000 to 2004, when he was Executive VP of Corporate Development and Strategy and oversaw the airline's bankruptcy restructuring. The unusual circumstances surrounding Brewer's departure and Rovinescu's appointment have led to speculation that Air Canada may be forced to enter bankruptcy a second time. Despite a strong restructuring and an enviable market position, the airline faces major upcoming debt repayments and pension obligations.

Air Canada: 747-200 Added

The 747-200 is now available as a retired aircraft at Air Canada Virtual. The 747 flew for Air Canada for three decades; at the moment, the only available route for the 747-200 is London Heathrow-Mumbai-Singapore, the latter two of which are new destinations for Air Canada Virtual. Additional routes may be coming in the next few weeks.
