British Airways Launches London City Longhaul, A318

British Airways today begins service from London City to New York JFK with its newest aircraft, the Airbus A318. The new innovative service connects London's most convenient airport with its biggest longhaul market.

Service is initially six days per week, with an additional six being added on 13 October. Due to headwinds, westbound flights make a technical stop in Shannon, where passengers will also go through U.S. customs. Eastbound service is nonstop. British Airways will operate two A318s, and the aircraft will be the largest to fly from London City Airport, which has both a short runway and a steep approach that requires special aircraft certification.

British Airways Begins E-Series Service

British Airways took delivery of it's first Embraer 170LR aircraft a few weeks ago and today begins flying the single-class, 76-seat aircraft. The aircraft will be operated from London City Airport by BA CityFlyer, British Airways' wholly-owned regional subsidiary.

The Embraer 170 obtained steep approach certification to operate at London City Airport in June 2007. The steep approach uses a software solution developed within the existing fly-by-wire system, which means improved flight quality and control, as well as reduced pilot workload, less weight, and lower maintenance costs.

The inaugural service flight for the aircraft will be London City-Amsterdam (BA8453). Other routes that will see the Embraer are as follows:
October 2009: London City-Frankfurt, London City-Nice
November 2009: London City-Madrid
December 2009: London City-Edinburgh, London City-Zurich
February 2010: London City-Glasgow
March 2010: London City-Barcelona

British Airways has ordered six Embraer 170s and five Embraer 190s, plus options for an additional three E-190s. The E-190 should enter service in April 2010. These aircrafts will replace the existing fleet of Avro RJ85s and RJ100s, which have been the dominant aircraft for London City since it opened two decades ago.

First ANA 787 Photos

Boeing recently released the first photos of the 787 in the livery of launch customer All Nippon Airways on Randy's Blog. They also shared photos of a traditional Japanese ceremony by ANA welcoming the new aircraft.

ANA was the launch customer of the 787, with an order for 50 aircraft and an additional 50 options in 2004. ANA Virtual will be the first virtual airline to operate the aircraft when it enters service next February at the earliest.

Branson Sounds Off On Boeing

Sir Richard Branson took two positions in Seattle last week at the delivery ceremony for V Australia's first aircraft. On the one hand, he said the business case for Virgin's transpacific ambitions is strong, pointing out that "we have one the world's strongest brands" and that V Australia didn't need to obtain any equity financing like Qantas did days before.

However, Branson didn't hesitate to show his ire about Boeing's recent strike, which delayed the launch of V Australia by two months and "hurt hundreds of thousands of our passengers....If union leaders and management can't get their act together to avoid strikes, we're not going to come back here again. We're already thinking, 'Would we ever risk putting another order with Boeing?' It's that serious."

V Australia's first flight departs on 27 February, from Sydney to Los Angeles.

Fifth 787 Delay Confirmed

Boeing confirmed additional delays to the 787 program, with the first flight in the second quarter of 2009, and the first delivery to ANA in the first quarter of 2010. The fifth delay is due to the recent machinist strike and ongoing fastener problems. "The 787 has been delayed almost two years, so our medium-term business plan, whose core component was the 787, is no longer viable," ANA President and CEO Mineo Yamamoto said.
