As part of its promotion for inflight internet access, AirTran Airways is having passenger Mark Malkoff live on their aircraft for an entire month. The tie-in? He'll be reporting on it using the inflight internet, on popular mediums such as flickr, Tweeter, Facebook, MyBlog, MySpace, and YouTube.
Here's part of Mark's FAQ that provides some more details:
Why are you staying on a plane for an entire month?
From a personal standpoint, I'm staying for a month to get over my fear of flying. I've struggled with the fear for years. I know it's an irrational fear. Statistically it's by far the safest mode of transportation. I'm going conquer my fear by “living” my life at 35,000 feet thanks to AirTran and in-flight WiFi service from Gogo.
Are you really never going to leave the plane?
Although I’ll switch planes, I’ll never set foot in an airport. (That way, you’ll know I’m not trying to do something like pick up a terminal wireless signal to stay connected!) I’ll change flights by way of the tarmac.
How many flights will you fly in a day?
On busy days I’ll be on up to twelve flights, but most days I’ll average five or six flights per day.
You can continue to check out www.markonairtran.com to follow my progress and see where I am at any moment.
Where are you going to sleep?
I’ll sleep every night alone on whatever plane is my last flight of the day.
I think I’ll just find a way to sleep in a row or aisle, but if you have any ideas for good places to lie down, let me know!

Are You Smarter Than A...
Southwest Airlines has a fantastic contest on their blog: 'Are You Smarter Than A Schedule Planner?' a spoof on a U.S. television show. Quite simply, the goal is to effectively schedule three aircraft on commercially optimal routings while observing operational restrictions. Of course, the real Southwest has to do this for over 500 aircraft with more restrictions than those included, but it's still a fascinating exercise to try and understand airline scheduling practices. Winners will receive a trip to Southwest headquarters in Dallas, among other goodies.

Lufthansa Continues March Across Europe

In addition, Lufthansa will launch Lufthansa Italia in February, flying from Milan Malpensa. The airline will operate six A319s previously at Germanwings, which Eurowings sold yesterday to Lufthansa. Eurowings is opting to focus on its regional operations on behalf of Lufthansa. Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber indicated that the Italian move did not rule out Lufthansa's continued pursuit of Alitalia.
Since Lufthansa's purchase of Swiss in 2005, it has also bought its way into BMI and Brussels Airlines.
