Airlink Faces Possible Grounding

Airlink, South African Airways' regional affiliate, may be grounded by the country's aviation agency after its third accident in the last three months. An ERJ-135LR overran the runway in George on Monday upon landing. Previously, a Jetstream 41 crashed in September in Durban and an ERJ-135LR overran the runway on takeoff in Port Elizabeth last month. Photos of the latest accident can be viewed here.

Airlink Crash in Durban

An Airlink Jetstream 41 crashed last Thursday after takeoff from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. The aircraft, on a repositioning flight, lost engine power and hit a vacant lot and landed near a school. The two pilots, one flight attendant, and a bystander were injured.

BA CityFlyer Accident at London City

British Airways Flight 8456, an Avro RJ100 operated by BA CityFlyer from Amsterdam to London City, suffered a collapsed landing gear on arrival yesterday. One person of the 71 on board were injured. The airport closed overnight and reopened this morning. London City Airport has a history of hard landings due to its short runway and steep approach, inducing pilots to try to land short.

Colgan Air Crash in Buffalo

Continental Flight 3407, a Dash 8-400 operated by Colgan Air from Newark to Buffalo, crashed last night into a house on approach, killing all 49 on board and one on the ground. There were an additional four injuries on the ground. Limited information is available at this time.

20th Anniversary of Lockerbie Bombing

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The 747-100, Clipper Maid of the Seas, was flying from London Heathrow to New York JFK. All 259 people on board were killed in addition to eleven people on the ground, making it the worst air disaster in U.K. history, and the largest terrorist attack against the U.S. at the time. Memorial services attended by families, friends, and employees are being held in Lockerbie, Heathrow, Syracuse, and Washington.

Continental Accident in Denver

Continental flight 1404, a 737-500W (N18611) flying from Denver to Houston Bush, ran off the runway on takeoff last night. Full details are not yet available, but at least 38 people were injured. Initial reports indicate that the plane may have briefly taken off before returning to the ground and ending up in a ravine. The right side of the aircraft caught on fire and eventually melted the fuselage. The temperature was 10° F, but ice and snow have not been considered factors.

British Airways Accident at Heathrow

A British Airways 777-200ER,G-YMMM, suffered a crash-landing at London Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon. Flight 38 was arriving from Beijing when it landed short of runway 27L. Thankfully, none of the 16 crew or 136 passengers were lost, although our thoughts and prayers go out to the four crew and nine passengers injured in the accident.

The flight led to the cancellation of hundreds of British Airways and other airline flights at Heathrow, the latest major disruption over the last few years at British Airways' primary hub (see p. 5 of the August 2007 Latitude for more). If the aircraft is written off, then this would be the first hull loss involving a 777.
