Automatic Locks

Post by NWADC9 » 29 Dec 2007, 20:01

To prevent bumping of ancient threads, what if we have an automatic locking system where after x amount of time, the thread gets locked?

Why would we want that? It's only in very rare occasions that someone brings up a topic that is a year old or more.

I disagree, I think people are starting to do it too much.

The best thing is probably just an announcement or simple common sense. If it's not on the first page, then don't reply to it. Or if it's older than like a month.

I can see how that would be beneficial for some topics that people manage to find that are months, even years old, but I can see many flaws in that plan.

If I wanted to add some pictures to a Trip Report that is 6 months old, I would be able to do so without creating a brand new topic. Now if a lock was put in place I may / may not be able to do this.

I just don't think it is worth doing this.

That's correct. The only similar feature that is available to us is "auto-pruning," which deletes topics that have no replies after a specified period of time.

Surely it's better to contribute (actually contribute, rather than just a random bump) to a thread that's already open, regardless of the age, if you have something to add?

The new version of the Boards have this feature, I believe currently set at about 30 days or so.

I say that we just leave it and just ask people not to bump threads. They will get it eventually...

We constantly get new members. They won't just "get it", as there's always gonna be some newbie.

Seriously though, does it actually bother you? Like it irks you to the point you can scroll past it and either ignore/answer it like a normal post?

Can you still read the topics after 30 days?

If so, I think that is the best idea as it stops newbies posting in old topics, but we can still read old topics and link to them for whatever reason. And it's also nice to keep the trip reports.

But Brandon(J) is right. What if there is info in ot wouldn't we rather have them just contiue that one rather then create a whole new one with no background?

How about this :

A new member signs up and as soon as he logs in, there should be a pop up requesting them not to answer topics more than XX Days old. And this popup should kepp coming for atleast 3 days.

Is the above possible :?:

A bit pointless TBH.

Not all newbies are dumb, and I think we are making a mountain out of a mole hill here.

I think the 30 day lock is good enough.

It is a terrible Idea. So you want more threads and more bandwidth to be used making us run slow to those still confined to slow 56K? TERRIBLE :rmad:
